How to choose the right deodorant?
In my daily life, there's one essential product I can't do without and that accompanies me everywhere: deodorant. Whether I'm at work or out, I always rely on it to keep me fresh and confident throughout the day. But I realized there's a lot we don't know about this essential product, so I decided to share everything I've learned about it, so you can choose the right product for you.
Where does body odor come from?
It's interesting to note that sweat itself has no odor. It consists of water, salts, and some toxins that the body excretes as part of a natural process that helps regulate temperature and purify the body. But why does sweat have an odor? Here's the secret! We have two types of sweat glands under our armpits: eccrine glands that produce light sweat, and apocrine glands that produce sweat rich in proteins and sebum. Bacteria on the skin's surface feed on this sweat, leading to the production of chemical compounds with an unpleasant smell.
Deodorant or antiperspirant?
Friends and clients often ask me about the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant. Your choice depends on your personal needs. Deodorant works by killing the bacteria responsible for body odor, while antiperspirant works by reducing sweat secretion by constricting skin pores. For me, I use deodorant on regular days and turn to antiperspirant on hot days or when I'm stressed.
My opinion on alum stone
If you prefer natural products, alum stone might be an excellent option for you. This stone naturally regulates perspiration and kills odor-causing bacteria. It's also gentle on the skin and leaves no residue on clothes. You can easily use it by wetting it before applying it to dry armpits.
Alum stone is sold in two forms:
-
Potassium Alum: This is the natural form of alum stone, primarily composed of aluminum and potassium salts. This type is considered safer and more natural, preferred by many who favor natural products.
-
Ammonium Alum: This is the synthetic form of alum stone, containing aluminum and ammonium salts. This type is typically industrially produced and is considered less pure compared to potassium alum.
In both cases, alum stone contains aluminum salts that act as an astringent, helping to reduce perspiration. However, many prefer to use natural potassium alum due to its less processed ingredients and often gentler effect on the skin.
How to choose the right type of deodorant?
For me, my choice of deodorant depends on what suits my lifestyle. Sometimes I prefer using a spray for an instant feeling of freshness, and other times I choose a stick for more convenience when on the go. But the most important thing for me is always the formula. The armpits are a sensitive area, so I make sure to choose a deodorant with a natural formula free from harmful substances like parabens.
